LIFE+ project Wilderness Wetland Wachau

The currently running project “Wilderness Wetland Wachau” is intended to follow on from two previous LIFE projects in the region. Extensive measures for revitalising the remains of old river courses are planned during the project period. Existing areas of riparian forest on already existing and newly created islands should be improved and expanded. The creation of spawning waters is envisaged for highly endangered amphibians such as the yellow-bellied toad and the Danube northern crested newt, nests will be created for white-tailed eagles and valuable old trees will be protected.

LIFE+ project Wachau-Mostviertel

The LIFE+ project Mostviertel-Wachau includes measures on the Danube and the Ybbs river. Revitalisation measures are being implemented on the Ybbs in Amstetten and on the Pielach, and disconnected side arms of the Danube are being reconnected to the river in the Wachau.

The Wachau has several attractive town, small-scale and regional museums that cast light on and provide information about a range of cultural aspects. Some were revised, extended or completely recreated within the scope of Wachau 2010plus.

Krems-Stein Shipping and World Heritage Centre

The Krems-Stein Shipping Centre has created a place that houses the World Heritage Centre as well as the entire logistics for scheduled and charter shipping in Krems, with a dining offer to match. The multifunctional venue is a central point of contact for visitors at the gateway to the Wachau.

Aggsbach Dorf Charterhouse

With the overall cultural tourism package based on the Aggsbach Charterhouse, the former place of activity of the Carthusians, Aggsbach Dorf, aims at positioning itself as a tourist destination on the south bank of the Danube. Existing sights will be integrated into an overall concept as a way to attract more visitors.

Kirchen am Fluss (Churches on the river)

Unique sacred buildings on both banks of the Danube decorate a landscape that has been marked by Christian culture for many centuries. The goal of the project was to raise awareness amongst the local population and visitors of the monasteries, churches and chapels and to make the buildings something to experience. To this end, a whole series of projects was implemented.

World Heritage Trail Wachau

The loop hiking trail on both sides of the Danube connects existing trails and makes it possible to explore the unique landscape of the Wachau on foot. In this way, the Wachau can be appreciated from a new perspective on 14 stages distributed over approx. 180 varied kilometres.

Wachau 2010plus

The aim of Wachau 2010plus was to further develop the cultural and landscape gem of the Wachau by restaging its cultural and tourism activities in harmony with the people who live and work in the region. Doing so should reveal the special quality of this cultural landscape to visitors.

Wachau information boards and guidance system

Information boards were developed and installed for the towns in the Wachau municipalities on the basis of an information point study. In addition, a standardised guidance system was devised and implemented in the form of the Wachau guidance system.

Asylum and integration coordination

Almost all municipalities in the LEADER region have taken in people who have fled from war and persecution in recent months. At the same time, committed citizens everywhere are taking care of these people on a voluntary basis – both during the asylum procedure and after they become recognised refugees. This work is challenging and takes up a lot of time. Providing these committed citizens with intensive support can give them the knowledge they need to increase the efficiency of their work through networking or to assist them in times of crisis.
