The aim of Wachau 2010plus was to further develop the cultural and landscape gem of the Wachau by restaging its cultural and tourism activities in harmony with the people who live and work in the region. Doing so should reveal the special quality of this cultural landscape to visitors.

Within the framework of the federal province of Lower Austria’s development programme Wachau 2010plus, more than 100 projects were initiated, the majority of them in the area of art and culture. The diversity of the Wachau was emphasised in this way in conjunction with projects in the areas of tourism and transport, and further developed with the region’s cultural heritage in mind. It was also about avoiding reducing the Wachau to a small number of hotspots and inviting tourists and locals alike to discover the Wachau away from the usual photo motifs.

The projects cover a wide range of topics:

  • Protection of historic buildings,
  • Garden projects,
  • Preparing sacred buildings for cultural tourism,
  • Museums, exhibitions and themed trails,
  • Art in the public space,
  • Cultural events,
  • Sustainable transport and
  • Measures for supporting tourism.

The final brochure provides an overview of the wealth of measures and projects that arose within the scope of Wachau 2010plus. Interested parties are welcome to request a copy through our office in Spitz.
