The loop hiking trail on both sides of the Danube connects existing trails and makes it possible to explore the unique landscape of the Wachau on foot. In this way, the Wachau can be appreciated from a new perspective on 14 stages distributed over approx. 180 varied kilometres.

In 2010, the Wachau opened a loop hiking tail called the "World Heritage Trail Wachau", which links up the best of the Wachau’s existing hiking trails. The standardised signage and feeder roads from the main modes of transport (railway stations, ferry and boat stations, bus stops) and from the towns make the World Heritage Trail an attractive hiking offer for locals and tourists alike. All the sights of the Wachau can be hiked to over approximately 180 kilometres and 8,000 vertical metres. The inclusion of attractive parallel trails enables one-day hikes on both sides of the Danube.

Together, the Jauerling Loop Trail, the Dunkelsteinerwald Loop Trail and the World Heritage Trail form a varied hiking offer in the region.
